The International Institute for Advanced Studies, established in the Keihanna Science City and crowned with culture, has continuously held the Study Group on the Creation of Japanese Culture since 2017 to promote ideological pursuit of what Japanese culture is, and discuss new ways to leverage culture through fusion of Japanese traditional culture and advanced science and technology. Following the open discussion Communicating the Power of Japanese Culture to the World – For Establishing a Base in the Age of New Normal at last year’s Kyoto Smart City Expo, we will hold a panel discussion titled Contemplating Kyoto as a Cultural Capital this year. From the Edo era to the Second World War, there have been three hubs in Japan: the political hub Edo (Tokyo), economic hub Osaka, and cultural hub Kyoto. Kyoto is a museum of Japanese culture with many cultural heritages. Right in front of our eyes, Nishijin textiles are woven, Kiyomizu ware is baked, and Kyoto lacquerware with beautiful lacquer art is made, and we can witness the process of creation of culture. We will consider Kyoto with such attractions of a cultural capital as a place to actively create culture, instead of a place to passively appreciate culture, and discuss it from various perspectives such as nature, history, advanced technology, literature, art, religion, and lifestyle.
